What is an industrial bearing?

Bearings are distinguished by the shape and arrangement of the rolling elements. Each model has its own specific performance characteristics, and therefore a specific use. They offer very low resistance to pivoting, yet can withstand high loads.

– A ball bearing is a device that enables a rotating element, also called a “shaft” or “bearing”, to rotate in relation to a fixed element. The balls roll on this surface. The whole assembly is lubricated with grease or oil, to reduce friction and wear.

– Roller bearings can support higher loads than ball bearings, because the rolling elements are in linear contact with the rings. However, they accept lower rotation frequencies. Needle roller and cage assemblies take up less space, but require preparation of the bearing seats.

– Radial contact ball bearings, also known as deep groove ball bearings, are the most common: they are both cheaper and more compact. They can accommodate self-alignments of between 2 and 16′, but can only tolerate moderate axial loads.

– For aggressive environments (humidity, dust), sealed bearings are used: they are sealed by polymer or sheet metal flanges. They are then greased for life.
